A Guidebook to an Ancient City

For the last couple of years, the energy of becoming has grown stronger and stronger.

Almost everyone I know has found a new way to be themselves – and has taken steps to become that new person. Jobs, relationships and belongings have fallen away like dreams do as you awaken.

There’s been so much that has changed around you, yet you feel stronger, more truly yourself, with deeper roots. An impulse towards authenticity has taken hold. You’ve started to be the one you always knew you could be.

And yet, it has this sort of lingering transience – in the back of your mind you still play with ideas of how things used to be. It’s like you haven’t quite broken through the comfortable cobwebs of old friends, old habits.  Who you used to be still has a sort of gossamer shimmery attraction.

Like dreams do as you awaken.

This new world you are entering – do you really HAVE to go there? Can’t you just fall back to sleep?  Resistance to awakening is the reality of self-transformation.

Maybe what motivated you to take on the path of becoming was a desire to escape. The IDEA of selftransformation is that there is something you can do – meditation, karma clearing, getting off of gluten or dairy, etc. – that will magically erase the subterranean, cellular reality of being human. The IDEA is that there is some way to get out of being mortal, descended from torturers and killers, fallibly connected to the divine.

Perhaps you thought you could just do this one new thing and find yourself in a world of white light forever more.

That was the dream and now, in September of 2012, you are coming into contact with a new awareness.  There is no escape.

Yet knowing this is far more delicious and satisfying than any other thing you’ve ever known.

If you think about it, the best parts of the last couple of years have been the moments when you’ve recognized how far you’ve come, how much closer to your authentic self you are. But, being human, you’ve been in some part motivated by an idea that you had almost done it, that soon it would level out, that you
could find stasis.

September of 2012 is the time when many will realize, with a growing sense of wonder, that the call to transform is lifelong. The beautiful experience of new levels of self-awareness is yours for the rest of your life. Now is the time to realize that there is not one instance of authenticity. Authenticity has to do with choosing to embrace not only who you can be but as well, who you still are.

The motivation is changing – from getting out, to getting in. Instead of hoping to somehow escape from the reality of being human, you learn to love the most human parts of yourself. Your soul didn’t choose to come in because it wanted or needed to suffer. Nor does it desire to escape from suffering.

You are here for the experience of continually learning to embrace what is, whatever it is.

Here is a symbolic image that describes it well: “Palms bending and twisting in a hurricane.”

Wishing you weren’t in the hurricane is likely to break you. There is no resisting this.

This month, may you choose to revel in it.
